{"id":34576,"date":"2017-05-08T12:20:46","date_gmt":"2017-05-08T10:20:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.brennerbasisdemokratie.eu\/?p=34576"},"modified":"2024-10-21T18:27:41","modified_gmt":"2024-10-21T16:27:41","slug":"will-italian-be-outlawed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.brennerbasisdemokratie.eu\/?p=34576","title":{"rendered":"Will the Italian language be outlawed?"},"content":{"rendered":"<blockquote><p>[In] what other part of the world would it be possible to outlaw the language of the state?<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This question of Alessandro Urz\u00ec, post-fascist member of South Tyrolean <em>Landtag<\/em> (parliament), <a title=\"BBC: Why an italian Row\u2026\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-europe-39641760\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">quoted by the BBC<\/a>, is an interesting one, since it can be answered at different levels:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Urz\u00ec refers to South Tyrol, where nobody even thinks of outlawing the &#8220;language of the state&#8221; \u2014 neither fully nor partially.<\/li>\n<li>However, many propose to withdraw <em>officiality<\/em> from \u2014 some or all \u2014 place names invented and imposed by a totalitarian regime, and that&#8217;s what we (and the BBC) are talking about.<\/li>\n<li>We could also question the concept of a (unique) &#8220;language of the state&#8221;, since there are many states in the world which have more than one official language without any hierarchy.<\/li>\n<li>If we reword Urz\u00ec&#8217;s question in a more consistent way (i.e. &#8220;in what other part of the world would it be possible to withdraw officiality from [imposed] place names [in the language of the state]?&#8221;) we could list\n<ul>\n<li>Australia (<a title=\"Was der Uluru kann, kann Urtij\u00ebi schon lang.\" href=\"http:\/\/www.brennerbasisdemokratie.eu\/?p=7309\">Uluru<\/a>\u2026)<\/li>\n<li>Canada (Inaluit\u2026)<\/li>\n<li>China (\u00dcr\u00fcmqi\u2026)<\/li>\n<li>Denmark (on the Faroe Islands)<\/li>\n<li>Spain (<a title=\"Ortsnamen \u00b7 Toponomastica: Galicia.\" href=\"http:\/\/www.brennerbasisdemokratie.eu\/?p=6362\">Galicia<\/a> and <a title=\"Ortsnamen \u00b7 Toponomastica: Catalunya.\" href=\"http:\/\/www.brennerbasisdemokratie.eu\/?p=6375\">Catalonia<\/a>\u2026)<\/li>\n<li>France (<a title=\"La Bretagna.
