J. Marion Sims aus Central Park verbannt.

Die Stadt New York hat eine Statue des Chirurgen J. Marion Sims aus dem Central Park entfernen lassen. Sims gilt als Vater der modernen Gynäkologie, hatte jedoch — ohne deren Einwilligung — Experimente an afroamerikanischen Sklavinnen ohne Anästhesie durchgeführt.

Am 16. April hatte die Public Design Commission von New York einem entsprechenden Vorschlag des Bürgermeisters Bill de Blasio zugestimmt, acht Tage später rückten Mitarbeiterinnen des Parks Department an und nahmen die Statue mit.

Die Maßnahme kann als indirekte Folge der rassistischen Vorfälle in Charlottesville gedeutet werden, auf die de Blasio mit der Ankündigung reagierte, zweifelhafte Symbole in seiner Stadt einer kritischen Überprüfung zu unterziehen.

Schon seit Jahren hatten zivilgesellschaftliche Bewegungen in New York die Entfernung der Statue von J. Marion Sims gefordert.
